First of all, to be clear I never used Spotify as my only and main music source. I always had local files on my computer or phone and they were my primary music source. Role of Spotify for me was only for discovering new music, artist etc. I also never had a premium account.
So What made me stop using Spotify? Shitty sound quality? Shitty UI? Broken lyrics? Not having some music? Removing musics? "Premium" features which are completely free on other platforms? Yes these are small things that add up. What made me furious is that this corpo doesn't give a fuck about their customers (or users😎 like me). The way they insist on making changes on ui for the worse, even though all of the users are complaining about it, terrible desktop client, terrible mobile client which barely functions on old devices, the sound quality and ahhhhhh.
After saying that it might sound something personal that I hate Spotify. And I'm not going to deny it. Yes it is something personal and I can't believe how those guys bear such abuse.
Speaking of UI, I was using an unofficial app that never got any updates so the UI never changed significantly for me. But I had chance to see the new UI and that TikTok swipe thing (honestly what the hell is that lmao) on my friend's phone and I dont think its changed for the better. Also mobile client is really really slow. I might be using an old phone but its not an excuse. There are apps which works better and faster than Spotify.
UI on the desktop isnt better at all (also those damned ballons showing me how to navigate through interface EVERY TIME I open it aghhhhh), I'm using web client and never downloaded the desktop one (and Im guessing its just an electron app but I might be wrong) and also I heard that the desktop program is resource intensive.
I don't want to talk about the sound quality, straight up not having some music, or removing them etc. I really dont understand why they are like this. I cant find any excuse for them...
What disgusted me the most is that they being a mainstream corpo, doing anything they want without any consequences at all. And all of the user base happily recieves the bad service even if they dont like it. Because what are they gonna do? Switch to an another service? Noooo, unfortunately they are so deepy rooted to Spotify into a point that they cant even think about switching to another platform. The problem here is that there is a group of people LISTENING TO SPOTIFY, not listening to music and they are not a minority.
These people acting like theres no other way to listen to music. If they are going to listen to music, they will use Spotify and thats it. Theres no other way for them. Also Spotify is everywhere, on every platform you can imagine. Spotify is like a comfort zone for them.
One reason why people keep using it even though they hate it is because Spotify keeps track of their stats, recommends them new thing based on their interests, I mean is it really worth dealing up with all that hassle for a shitty "wrapped" page? Services like last.fm does that for free and they are doing it better. Both recommending new things or keeping stats. I mean its also not hard to set it up but as I said, Spotify is a comfort zone for them which they are scared to step out of.
Spotify is perfectly aware of this comfort zone thing so they are pushing their intolerability limits, abusing the user base by manipulating them into spreading this sick behaviour. Whats the worst gonna happen? Nothing!
So yeah, not the UI, how bad the service is the reason I quit. The reason is that their treatment is so manipulative and I didnt wanted to be a part of this sick ridiculous community. First it was annoying me how the community was not caring about the service abusing them, now it started to disgust me. I cant believe how people not even think twice about the situation, there are people who goes like "oh well then" after seeing a bad feature is added or a good one removed.
Dont get me wrong, I also like tracking my music and recommendations and such :) So what am I gonna do? I requested my data from Spotify and will import it to last.fm when I got them. I also downloaded foobar2000 on my computer which looks cool for now. On my phone, I have SicMu Player and foobar2000. Both of them are great. I also downloaded a last.fm plugin to foobar2000 and an app for my phone. Everything seems fine for now.
It may sound ironic that after telling you about last.fm and foobar2000 but I found out that Stallman also wrote something about this Spotify thing. Here, give it a read↗ :D
